Just outside Torino there is an important protected area that covers about 750 hectares in the municipalities of Baldissero Torinese, Pino Torinese, San Mauro Torinese and Torino, where the main stretch of the river Po flows on the valley floor. The landscape, so fascinating that has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, had not yet been formed 400 million years ago. In fact, it was created only later, emerging from the sea that at that time formed a large gulf within the Alpine range. In the marine sediments that make up today's hills, we can still find many fossils of the organisms that in ancient times inhabited those waters.
Now the area is populated by many animal species. Woodpecker, jays, titmice, squirrels, wild boars, foxes, buzzards, owls and badgers animate in every season of the year the thick woods of oaks and chestnuts that spread down to the Po river.
On the meadows, at the top of the hill, you can enjoy some beautiful views of the Alps and the city.
