TEATRO CARIGNANO DI TORINO

The Teatro Carignano, Torino’s only eighteenth century theatre, and Palazzo Carignano, an elegant example of Piemontese baroque architecture, seem to admire each other from opposite sides of the same square. Built in 1711 in the area known as the "Trincotto Rosso" – a tiered outdoor area used for ballgames and often used for shows and celebrations – was rebuilt to a design by Giovanni Battista Feroggio, following a fire which completely destroyed it in 1786. The auditorium is designed in a horseshoe shape, with four circles and a gods, upholstered throughout in red velvet, featuring gilded stuccoes and woodwork, making this place so special as to be nicknamed “the sweet box”. It presents the performances by Teatro Stabile di Torino.
