THE TRANSHUMANCE

The transhumance is a very old tradition which marks the beginning and end of summer, when flocks and herds move on, in May, to find more fertile and verdant pastures or, in October, sheltering in barns while waiting for winter to arrive.

Shepherds have a deep knowledge of the land, its balance and its dangers; that's why the transhumances are good opportunities to bring new generations closer to these ancient customs and ensure their continuity in the future.

In Piedmont the time of transhumance is also used to revamp tourism in Alpine valleys through the rediscovery of trails and paths, as well as the enhancement of rural and mountain areas, which would otherwise be destined for abandonment and neglect.
