Perhaps not everyone knows that unfortunately, a concentration camp also existed in Piedmont.
Established by the Italian Social Republic at Borgo San Dalmazzo, in the province of Cuneo, it served to reunite Jews awaiting deportation to Auschwitz. It remained active for one year, from 8 September 1943 until February 1944. In this year 357 Jews, 334 foreigners, 23 Italians were deported.
A Deportation Memorial was built in the train station: twenty vertical silhouettes represent survivors and three hundred thirty-five slabs fixed to the ground remember those who, instead, never returned. First name, last name, age and the abbreviation of the country of origin are given for each.
The nearby former Church Sant'Anna is home to MEMO4335 Museum, a multimedia historical-educational tour of the Shoah in Europe and the history of Jews deported to Auschwitz.
