Ivrea Carnival is a unique event in which history and legend intertwine to create a big and highly symbolic civic festival. The event is rooted in medieval times, when the community of Ivrea succeeded in freeing itself from tyranny, sanctioning its independence.
The central event of the carnival is the spectacular “Battle of oranges”, which represents the uprising of the people against the tyrant's armies. For three afternoons, the teams - all on foot and without any form of protection - fight against the orange throwers on their carts, protected by leather helmets. The throwing carts are divided into pairs and fours and alternate in the squares for a few minutes.
One of the highlights of the event is the traditional historical parade.
