One of the most important films of Italian neorealism: “Riso amaro", Bitter Rice, the second chapter of Giuseppe De Santis' well-known "Land Trilogy," was filmed in the Vercelli countryside, specifically at the Veneria farmstead in Lignana and the Selve estate in Salasco. De Santis sent a clear political message, contrasting popular melodrama with truthful cinema.
Here then, amidst the personal stories, we can see how the hard work of the women rice workers was carried out, amid sacrifices and singing.
Interest in the great physical toil that dominates workers' days turned the film into an interesting historical source.
