It is the oldest preserved medieval building at Piazzo, a historic district of the city of Biella.
The church is mentioned as early as 1180 in a document, but it is not possible to say what remains of the original church.
The building preserved today is the one consecrated in 1227 by Bishop Ugo di Sessa and then remodelled in later periods: the bell tower was added later, but it is already mentioned in two documents from the late thirteenth century early fourteenth century; the portico is from the seventeenth century; inside, the burials placed under the floor date back to the sixteenth century; stucco work, covering the medieval structures, dates back to 1862.
Various works of artistic interest are preserved inside the church: the Carved choir (1697/1698), the fifteenth-century triptych by Daniele de Bosis (with the Madonna and the Child, the Saints Gottardo and Giacomo with donor Giacomo Dal Pozzo) and the Baroque Baptistery.
