LA PIETRA DELLE MADRI A VIU'

In the small market square of Viù, a charming town nestled in the Lanzo Valleys, is the Pietra delle Madri (Mothers' Stone), also known as "Masso Falchero" (Falchero Boulder).

The boulder was discovered by Marco Cima only in 1992. Until a few centuries ago, it was hidden inside a mill, the base for the oil mill dedicated to walnut oil, produced in the area.

Several scholars have hypothesised that the three figures, engraved in the stone, belong to the second Iron Age. It is therefore probable that the Mothers would be part of the ancestral cults present in the mountain area. Goddesses were in fact connected to fertility cults and the seasonal cycle. Not surprisingly, they are a triad: three, just like the months of each season.
