One of the most picturesque palaces in Turin is certainly the Palazzo Barolo, which was built by the Provana family in the early 1600s. Not everyone knows that young Elena Matilde Provana lived in this palace an unhappy life.
The first omen of misfortune occurred during the wedding with her cousin Gerolamo IV Gabriele Falletti of Barolo. That day, during the dances celebrating the wedding, the staircase of the palace collapsed causing a lot of confusion among those present. Nobody was injured, but many saw the incident as a sign of misfortune.
In fact, a few years later, her father called his daughter to the the palace because he was no longer able to pay the dowry due to his gambling debts. Elena Matilde she was forbidden to see her husband and her pain led to her suicide.
According to the legend, the spirit of Elena Matilde continues to wander restless in the paternal home, in the vain search of her beloved husband.
