CASTELLO MARCHESI INCISA DI CAMERANA

This imposing castle dominates the hills and fields in a strategic position, naturally defended on three sides by steep precipices. Camerana is a settlement of ancient origin, probably high- medieval, at the time already complete with a small fortress probably occupying the current location, or rather a short distance from the settlement that is currently the main town, near the Villa and presented the characteristics of a massive stronghold without a tower. Indeed, the current one, slender and towering, does not present characteristics of such high antiquity, but this is easily attributable to the complete renovation of the complex carried out by Corrado Del Caretto during the XIII century. The lower parts of the masonry that are still visible could possibly date back to that phase, and were subsequently heavily transformed by work carried out by the same family at the beginning of the XV century, following the interlude of the feud with the Angioini. Corrado’s interventions are clearly visible: starting with the existing stronghold to organise a powerful defensive system revolving around the new square tower, a real donjon tower, connected to the existing one and completed with powerful connecting walls. Indeed, the castle again played an important protection role for the domain, located in a strategic position along the major traffic routes between the Piedmontese hinterland and Savona, or rather the one passing through Saliceto and Monesiglio ending in Cortemilia and the Montezemolo road leading to Ceva.
Transformed into a villa in 1820, worthy of mention is the monumental staircase leading to the upper floor where the splendid “Salone degli Alerami” is located, frescoed between 1820 and 1846 with a series of twelve images depicting the heroic feats of Aleramo (marquis of Monferrato and ancestor of many of the lords of the Langhe region, including the Ceva and Incisa) and adorned with a monumental marble fireplace, on which the family coat of arms stands out. Partially abandoned during the XX century, many of the ancient parts of the castle collapsed until the demolition of the residential wings, carried out in 1930 and it gradually became a ruin dwarfed by the profile of the tower. Restored by the comune in the ‘80s it was made accessible to the public.
