CASTELLO DI PARELLA

The imposing structure is rectangular with half-hidden geometric designs. Next to the main door, with its ornamental Baroque motifs, is a corner cylindrical tower, the only surviving one from the four original towers which were incorporated into the radical 12th century restructuring. The preferred home of Carlo Emilio San Martino di Loranze, the castle then went to the Avogadro family, to the Marelli family, and to the Dotta family who oversaw the restoration. The manor consists of a series of "unique" rooms: those on the piano nobile were decorated by Cesare Chiala who worked on them around 1683; paintings exhibited depict important local people. Particularly striking are the architectural structures characterized by loggias typical to Canavese which face the courtyard. The sculptures, the fountain, the staircases, the wrought iron decorations, the large fireplaces, and the cantinas are some of the elements that, together, animate an austere place, making it more interesting.
