The beautiful castle of Cherasco was built in 1348 following the will of Luchino Visconti, Duke of Milano, who, after having defeated the Savoy and taken possession of the city, decided to give the city a fortress. The building follows the fate of the Visconti family. In 1529, following the Treaty of Cambrai, the structure was returned to the Savoy who used it as a refuge from the plague in 1630 and from the French in 1706. It is an imposing, quadrangular structure with a tower at every corner and a small central tower with an entrance drawbridge. Restructured at the end of the 19th century by the architect Alfredo D’Andrade, it testifies today to Cherasco’s glorious past and offers visitors a superb spot from which to take in the surrounding landscape with its view of the Novello, the La Morra, and the Vergne hills.
