The castle is located at the edge of the Candelo "baraggia" (moorland), secured on a hill where it looks over the plain where the Cervo River flows. Two cylindrical towers placed at the north and south corners are what remain of the original medieval structure. Two roads offer easy access to the castle: the older, the "Solata" dates back to the 16th century and leads to the "del Moro" ("of the Moor") door that opens on to the stable's small yard. Continuing on foot, you reach two entrances: the "iron" door that leads to the courtyard where the Baroque Chapel di San Giovanni is located as well as the large stone staircase that leads to a higher courtyard and the "green" door that looks out over another courtyard. The second route, built about mid-way through the 19th century, is the castle's main entrance and takes visitors to the terraced gardens and to the 15th century crenellated tower. Typical materials from the area were used in the castle's construction: river stones, clay bricks, flat and curved terracotta roof tiles, and wood from the Sessile oak, the poplar, and the nut tree. Stone barrel and groin vaults cover the ceilings of the cantinas, while the piano nobile has several vaulted ceilings and decorated lacunar ceilings. The oldest pavement is in terracotta, even if the piano nobile has wood and mosaic, including the flooring in the "little apartment" in the Baroque wing which truly stands out.
