According to several people, the original center of the Castello (Castle) would date back to the Late-Roman period. After having been destroyed by the Huns around 452 A. D., the building was rebuilt during the Middle Ages, only to be sacked once again during the siege by Charles of Anjou. Its present look is the fruit of a 15th century reconstruction and work by the Sforzi’s who transformed it into a military fortress. At present, the Castello houses the Museo Civico Archeologico (City Archeological Museum) and exhibits collections that span from prehistory to the medieval period. The park, where a Bird Garden is found, is a protected spot where, besides birds, also amphibians and mammals find refuge.
