CHIESA DI SAN MAURIZIO

Due to its location at the top of the hill, the Chiesa di San Maurizio watches over the whole of Pinerolo. It was constructed around the year 1000 and expanded in 1442 and reconstructed in late-Gothic style between 1463 and 1470. The sacred building was ruined in 1618 and restored in the 19th century. The interior is subdivided into five naves with cruciform pillars which hold the system of vaults and the bordering cross vault. The apsis is polygonal and decorated with cloths of Beaumont and Petrini. The church also holds remarkable frescoes and the corpse of the princes of Acaja, which were entombed in 1898. The Romanesque bell tower from 1336 with its strange clock with a single hand to indicate the hours is also remarkable.
