The Cattedrale (Cathedral), consecrated to Maria Assunta and to San Lorenzo, was built to take the place of an earlier one destroyed by the Spanish who had to enlarge their fortified areas. The construction of the new building needed time; the work begun in 1574 continued until 1592. The present-day look of the Cattedrale is Neo-Classic and dates back to the 19th century. The church was built lengthwise on three naves and has a raised rectangular presbytery closed in by a semi-circular apse. The arches have frescoes by the Magi di Sannazzaro painted between 1853 and 1856, while, close to secondary altars, visitors can admire more ancient paintings dating back to the 15th century and the 16th century. In the Cattedrale’s interior, besides a precious fragment from the Croce (Cross), there are the relics of San Marziano who, according to tradition, converted the city to Christianity.
