ABBAZIA DI SANTA FEDE

In the heart of Monferrato, a bit more than a kilometer from the community of Cavagnolo, in a spot that invites meditation and spirituality, the abbey of Santa Fede is found, which years ago, was part of those places where pilgrims stayed to rest from their wandering. Many came from the Western Alps and from the area of Renan and traveled the Via Francigena in order to reach Roma. The abbey, which the Benedictine monks of Saint Foy de Coques wanted, was built around the mid 12th century close to the sanctuary dedicated to Santa Fede, a young French woman martyred in Agen (France) under Diocleziano in 303. The remains of the Saint are kept in the abbey of Conques. The façade has a very beautiful strong release entrance with sculpted columns and capitals, splayed archivolts, lunette architraves adorned with reliefs, and two semi-columns on two sides. Within the three nave interior, one can still admire a central apse.
